Lent Devotionals

As we journey through the Lent season together, we will be going through excerpts of Journey to the Cross by Kendall Haug and Will Walker. Lent derives from the Latin word meaning “lengthening” and spans 40 days from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday (which is actually 47 days). The Sundays during this period aren’t counted because they are considered “mini-celebrations” of Christ’s resurrection.

The number forty is frequently mentioned in the Scriptures and carries great significance. It usually represents a period of trial, testing, and preparation, as found in the following examples:

  • The flood during Noah's time lasted 40 days.

  • Moses spent 40 days on Mount Sinai.

  • Jesus was in the wilderness for 40 days.

Likewise, Lent is a time of preparation where we anticipate the death of Christ so that we can truly look forward to the resurrection of Jesus. It is this very preparation and remembrance of the Cross that gives us a deep and powerful longing for the joy of Easter and stretches our faith.

As the title of this devotional suggests, Lent represents a journey to the cross, where one reflects on sin and brokenness and how Christ won our reconciliation with God. On the cross, Jesus bore our sin and exchanged His life for ours. He was separated from God so that we could experience union with Him. He was abandoned by God so that we could be adopted as His children. He was raised with God so that we too might be raised with God. The drama of our redemption is the story of Lent.

The journey to the cross is a powerful way to remind ourselves of these gospel truths so that it might increase our appreciation for all that Christ has done for us.
